Changing tooling on horizontal bending machines requires care when going through all the individual steps. Misaligning a die or making an incorrect bend can be caused by the most minor of oversights and can also cause serious harm.
Isolate the Machine First
Switch off and isolate the machine at the mains. Lock out the isolator if your workshop has a lockout procedure. The safe use of work equipment and machinery regulations state that all moving parts must be at rest before any form of maintenance or adjustment is undertaken on the machine.
Release and Remove the Existing Tooling
First, loosen the clamping bolts for the existing tooling in the correct order (as specified in the machine manual) and then support the die. The tooling for horizontal bending machines can be very heavy and, if not supported, could fall and cause damage.
Clean the Tool Seat Thoroughly
Clean the tool seat area and the locating surfaces with a cloth to remove any dirt or debris. Check for any burrs or scoring. A small raised burr can prevent the die and former from seating properly. A finger tip will detect any raised edges that may be missed by the eye.
Fit and Seat the New Tooling
Place the new die and former into the tool seat. Ensure that the die and former are seated fully before any bolts are tightened. Also ensure that the die and former are seated squarely in the tool seat to ensure that the correct bend angle is maintained.
Check Clamping Torque
Tighten bolts to the recommended torque value, as specified in the manufacturer’s documentation. A useful reference for Bending Machines is www.cotswold-machinery-sales.co.uk/euromac-bending-machines/horizontal-bending-machines/.
Run a Test Piece
Test Bend – cut a test piece from scrap material of the same specifications as intended use. Check the bend angle and radius against design drawing, and if required, adjust the back-stop or ram position prior to commencement of production.
Follow each of the steps in order and you will find that there is really very little additional time taken and subsequently all your bends will be accurate from the first piece.
