What you should know before you buy refurbished laptops

Technology

Refurbished laptops can offer excellent value for money, but what should you be aware of before buying one?

1. Is the laptop a refurb or an open box return?

A refurb is generally accepted to be an item that has been repaired, cleaned or spruced up in some way; however, open-box returns are sometimes included in this category.

Open-box returns may well have never been switched on/configured, whereas refurbished laptops will have been actively used. You can find out more about open box returns here.

You should establish which of these it is, as this should be reflected in the price and will change your expectations.

2. If the laptop is refurbished, who has done the refurbishing?

Refurbishments are sometimes performed by the original manufacturer and sometimes by a third party. There are advantages to both. The original company will have easier access to the right packaging/parts, whilst third-party refurbs tend to be cheaper.

Online resources

There are a number of companies that specialise in refurbished laptops. Many of these have significant online resources, such as www.refurbishedlaptops.co.uk/.

3. Does the laptop still have a warranty?

A warranty provides useful protection and is well worth having. Ask the seller directly about this before making a purchase. It is usually more likely if the original manufacturer has completed the refurbishment.

4. What is the returns policy?

As it can take a while to notice any issues, you will ideally want a returns window of at least a month. Anything under two weeks is probably best avoided unless the savings are astronomical.

5. Does the laptop come with all the main elements?

This is definitely worth checking, as you don’t want to open your box and discover there is no charger etc.
