Drain Problems Caused by Heavy Rain and Flooding

Nature

In many areas of the UK, flooding has been severe. People have had to leave their flooded homes in some places, and many of the roads have also had to be closed due to flooding. Rain on this scale causes many issues, and one of the biggest problems that it can cause is damage to the drains.

Our drains make sure that dirty water is removed from our homes and when they are working correctly it is a great system that keeps us healthy. However, a problem with the drains can have more consequences, and if you suspect a drain problem, you should call a professional like this drain lining company drainpower.co.uk/drainage-services/drain-lining/ to come and take a look for you. Here are some of the issues that heavy rain can cause for your drains.

Flooding – If the ground has flooded, this allows too much water to get into the soil. When this happens, it puts pressure on the structure of the drains and can cause structures around them to do the same. If there is excess water, it needs to be removed ideally as soon as possible so that the ground can dry out and put less pressure on the ground and the surrounding structures.

Blockages – Because there is only so much water that a drain can handle at any one time, as well as the fact that other things can make their way into the water during a flood, this can make a drain much more susceptible to becoming blocked when there is flooding around.

The high pressure of the water can be simply too much for the drain to cope with in one go and this can then lead to the drain becoming blocked. This is another reason to maintain your drains regularly, as this is also more likely to occur when there are already problems within the drains.

Broken Pipes – Another issue that the large volumes of water can cause is issues with the pipes. When there is a lot of pressure from large quantities of water put on the pipes, it can cause them to buckle and break, especially in older drains or drains which have already got problems.

Debris being pushed into the drain can also cause the pipes to break and this then needs to be repaired as soon as possible.
