Understanding and Caring for People With a Mental Illness

Health

There are lots of things that we know to be signs of mental illness, and there are many people all over the country who are struggling with mental health problems. Nowadays there are many more resources available that help us to combat these issues, from mental health training courses like this www.tidaltraining.co.uk/mental-health-courses/ to the many online resources that are available to use such as Mind the mental health charity.

Some of the problems that come with mental illness are based around common misconceptions, and there are certain behaviours that people might not link up with mental illness, and of course how we see it portrayed in the media is not always the reality of it.

Some mental illnesses for instance have a bad reputation, and can be associated with criminals, whereas some types of behaviour can be written off in a certain way, however it could be that it is a symptom of mental illness rather than a reflection on the person’s character.

When helping someone who has a mental illness, it is important to be understanding and aware of the symptoms of the illness, as this can be hard for both the people around and for the person who is suffering themselves. For example, attending a support group for people in the same situation can be really beneficial and helps you to feel less alone and see how other people cope with it themselves.
