How To Reduce Plastic Waste in Your Home

Home

Climate change has been at the forefront of the media for a while now and for a valid reason. Temperatures across the world are increasing at a dangerous rate and we are nearly reaching the point that the effects of our emission of greenhouse gases are irreversible. Now more than ever, we must do what we can to help save our planet. Reducing plastic waste is one of these ways, so I will give you some advice on how to do this in your home.

The first step you can do to reduce plastic waste is to not use plastic bags for shopping. Using a reusable bag such as a cotton tote bag is a lot better. The bags you can roll up into a little pouch are great for storing permanently in your handbag or even your pocket, ready for when you need it.

Another great way to reduce plastic waste in your house is to buy food that is loose as much as possible. Fortunately, there is an increase of shops offering refills of a variety of loose food items. Buying at a farmer’s market is another possibility as well as ordering a plastic-free fruit and veg box from your local farm.

Store your food in labelled glass jars, so you can easily refill them from a shop that sells loose food and grains. Remember to sterilise the jars before use and every couple of months.

Lastly, try to only buy plastic-free and biodegradable products, like bamboo toothbrushes. You’d be surprised by how much plastic is around the house. For example, an Electric Meter box is often made with plastic, which gets worn down over time, ultimately ending up in the general waste. To prevent this, use sustainable materials, like metal.
