Crocheting a basket is the perfect project for beginners. The best part is that you can make it in a seamless, continuous round, meaning you won’t need to worry about slip stitches to join rounds.

- Jumbo Tapestry Needle

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1. Create a Magic Ring
Start by making a magic ring. If you’re unsure how to do this, you can also start with a chain of 4, join with a slip stitch to form a ring, and work into that ring.
Step 2. Crochet the Base of the Basket
Chain 2, which acts as your first stitch. Then, crochet 8 half double crochet, or HDC, stitches into the magic ring.
Since you’ll be working in a continuous round, it’s easy to lose track of where each round starts, so use a stitch marker in the first stitch of the round to help keep track. If you accidentally crochet too many or too few stitches, your basket could become lopsided.
Step 3. Increase to Make the Bottom Flat
- 2 HDC in each stitch around, 16 HDC total.
- 1 HDC in the first stitch, 2 HDC in the second stitch. Repeat for a total of 24 HDC.
- 1 HDC in the first two stitches, 2 HDC in the third stitch. Repeat for a total of 32 HDC.
Step 4. Sides of the Basket
After the base is the size you want, around 10-12 inches wide, stop increasing. From here on, just make 1 HDC in each stitch, without increasing, until your basket is as tall as you’d like it to be.
Step 5: Finish Off
- Once the sides are tall enough, fasten off the yarn and leave a long tail.
- Use your jumbo tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends inside the basket, securing them tightly.
- To add handles, simply chain 10-12 stitches, depending on how big you want the handle to be, and attach each end to the sides of your basket.
